Am I being a little dramatic? Probably, but I'm getting real tired of the "let's work together" shtick. The Republicans have shown that they are not honest partners and that they have no interest in being such. Quit giving them a place at the table when they have consistently proven that their goal is to set the table on fire. Case in point:
The bottom line is that, once again, this is either brilliant Obama-fu or a capitulation to the shrill minority and the moneyed interests. The brilliant Obama-fu would be that now, the public option, as Obama has said he wants it, becomes almost the default policy. The co-op and the trigger now need to prove they are better options.
Still, I feel like progressives get the short stick again. But maybe that's our role in this administration. We are the midfield playmaker. We make the last pass in the face of a brutal tackle. Yeah, we get the cleats to the ankle, which hurts hella lot, but we make the play that results in the winning goal. I still have faith that Obama is giving us a wink as he throws us under the bus and that the wink means it will be worth it and we will get what we want. Ever the optimist.
Update: Here we go. Maxine Waters floats the bubble - anyone got any better ideas than the Public Option? Damn, I'm good. Now there will be discussion of the co-op and trigger options and it's up to us to eviscerate them as the bad ideas they are. Wonder Blogger Powers, activate: form of a reasoned rebuttal!

Of course Repubs don't want to be at the table -- they think the table stands for the crutch that government gives to people who aren't self-sufficient enough to balance their food on their laps! Four legs that *equally* distribute the weight of the tabletop. Come on! That's socialism there!
OK, to be serious -- I agree that it's time for Obama to stop trying to compromise and get this bill through. But I think his speech last night was actually pretty pointed. By saying that he is open to ANYTHING CONSTRUCTIVE, he is not being naively bi-partisan (at least in my mind, where I like to believe he's a step ahead of us). He is showing -- when the Repubs rage and heckle and dig their heels in -- that they are not just opposed to certain aspects of reform but that they are opposed to... ANYTHING CONSTRUCTIVE. He's setting them up as the party of nihilism -- do nothing, kill everything. When that's good and established, I hope (and think) that he will go ahead and pass a strong bill (maybe not ideal -- but strong) and let the people remember who it was who did nothing to help and let it be the Repubs who put the nail in their own coffin.
Too optimistic? Too trusting? Perhaps!
Exactly, I still trust that this is all Obama Fu (as in, Neo: "I know Kung Fu"). But it is sometimes hard to believe. Essentially, I think Obama is doing two things: giving the Republicans as much rope as they need AND letting progressives find our shouting voice and drive the policy. The first one is easy but the second one is a serious high wire act. He has to poke us enough with a sharp stick to get us riled up and PUSHING back, calling, emailing, writing op-eds. But he can't poke so hard that we become bitter and disenchanted. All the while he can't tip ANYONE off that the Democratic wing of the Democratic party (ie, progressives/liberals) is calling the shots. We have to figure that out on our own.
